Canada has officially launched the online passport renewal service. This makes it easier and more convenient now for eligible Canadian citizens to renew their passports without visiting a passport office. The new service, which became available on July 28, 2026, is part of the federal government's broader effort to modernize public services and improve the customer experience.
To renew the passport, the applicant has to be 16 years of age or older, currently living in Canada, and must be renewing a regular passport that was issued within the last 15 years. The renewal is only available for Canadian citizens renewing an existing passport. The online renewal cannot be done by first-time passport applicants, permanent residents, work permit holders, study permit holders, or visitors to Canada.
Applying online requires the applicant to complete the renewal application online, upload a digital passport photo, and pay the required fees electronically. The applicants will also receive real-time updates on the status of their application.
Officials estimate that the new digital platform could facilitate up to two million passport renewals annually, thereby reducing wait times and enhancing efficiency.
