Canadian citizens and permanent residents who meet certain eligibility criteria can sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence in Canada. The country considers family reunification as a high priority, which explains the fact that family immigration is the second largest category of Canada immigration, after economic immigration.

The Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) adopted a lottery system for selection in the years 2017 and 2018 to select candidates. However, in 2019, PGP returned to the first-come, first-served system.
The first step in applying for sponsoring your parents/grandparents is submitting an interest to sponsor form on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. IRCC will select a set number of candidates from this pool of interested sponsors. They will be invited to submit complete applications based on the order in which they submitted their Interest to Sponsor forms. They have to submit the complete application within 90 days of accepting the Invitation to Apply (ITA).
A Canadian citizen/permanent resident may bring their parents and grandparents to Canada on a Super Visa, which is a multiple re-entry visa with validity for up to 10 years. Parents and grandparents can come to Canada whenever they please during the time period when the Super Visa is valid.
