Ontario has introduced a new points-based scoring system for candidates who are applying for provincial nomination under its newly introduced Ontario Workforce Priority Stream (OWPS). This brings a major shift in how the province selects candidates for permanent residence.
The new scoring system will rank eligible candidates based on multiple economic and labour market factors. The highest-scoring applicants are to receive invitations to apply for provincial nomination. Successful nominees can then apply for Canadian permanent residence through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
Candidates can now earn up to 140 points under this new system. Points are given based on several factors such as the location of the job offer, occupation, wage level, Canadian and international work experience, education, language proficiency, and temporary resident status. Furthermore, additional points are given for Canadian educational credentials and regional employment priorities.
The new transparent scoring system is expected to help applicants better understand their competitiveness and also enable the province to target workers in priority occupations and regions more effectively.
