Applicants seeking Canadian citizenship by descent may have to provide proof of their Canadian ancestor’s citizenship or naturalization. A free searchable database maintained by Library and Archives Canada can help applicants locate historical naturalization records.
The Canadian government published naturalization lists between 1915 and 1951, including lists published in the Canada Gazette. Records may include an ancestor’s name, former nationality, occupation, residence, date and naturalization certificate number.
However, finding an ancestor in the Gazette does not replace the original naturalization certificate. The database does not contain copies of the actual naturalization files, which are held by IRCC.
If the original record cannot be obtained then the applicant should document their efforts to locate it. Where available, a Letter of No Record from the relevant authority may also be included as supporting evidence.
