Canada has published specific eligibility criteria for foreign academic examiners who may want to work in the country without a work permit. The updated federal instructions require that eligible examiners must be senior academic or industry professionals with an established reputation in their field. They should have an official invitation from the organization requesting their services.
The exemption covers three categories: thesis examiners, research proposal evaluators, and program or university project evaluators. Their activities must last less than six months, and they cannot receive remuneration from a Canadian source for the exempt work. Officers may also issue a visitor record specifying conditions. Applicants must still meet Canada’s normal visitor entry requirements, including obtaining a TRV or eTA when required.
