Canada has increased the amount of money international students must demonstrate for living expenses when applying for a study permit outside Quebec. The new requirements apply to applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026. A single student without dependants must now show CAD $23,448 for living expenses, an increase of $553 from the previous requirement. The amount rises according to family size, reaching CAD $62,054 for a family of seven. Each additional family member requires another $6,318.
These amounts are separate from the money applicants must demonstrate for their first year of tuition and transportation costs. Students whose programs last more than one year must also explain how they intend to finance the remainder of their studies. Applicants can demonstrate funds through bank statements, education loans, Canadian bank accounts, guaranteed investment certificates, scholarships, rental income and other acceptable financial documents.
The changes also come as Canadian immigration officers face greater scrutiny over the source of applicants’ funds. Since July 2026, officers have been instructed to assess the source of financial resources in all study permit applications. Quebec follows separate financial requirements, with students needing to meet both provincial and federal conditions.
