International students at major Ontario universities will face higher mandatory health insurance costs. The higher fees will be effective from September 1, 2026. The annual premium for the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) will increase from $792 to $948, a $156 or 20% increase for individual coverage. For a family of three, the annual premium will rise from $2,376 to $2,844.
UHIP is mandatory for most international students enrolled at participating Ontario universities. Students are generally enrolled automatically, with premiums charged through their university accounts. Exemptions are available in limited circumstances. It includes having eligible OHIP coverage, another approved insurance plan, diplomatic status or government-sponsored coverage.
UHIP provides coverage for services including doctor visits, diagnostic tests, emergency care, and hospital surgeries, with coverage of up to $1 million per policy year. It does not provide the same coverage as OHIP. Students may need additional insurance for services of dental care, prescription drugs and vision care.
