Canada’s University of Toronto (U of T) is now the leading publicly funded university in North America for research output. The university ranks ahead of renowned U.S. universities such as Berkeley and UCLA in research output. According to the August 2026 edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), U of T recorded a research output score of 75.1. It is the highest among publicly funded universities in North America. UCLA ranked fourth with 59.8, while the University of California, Berkeley ranked ninth with 52.0.
The ranking measures research output using the number of academic papers indexed in major scientific and social science databases. U of T was also ranked 13th worldwide for overall research and academic performance, improving from 14th last year. The achievement highlights the university’s strong research presence and strengthens Canada’s position on the global higher-education stage.
