Eligible foreign workers can now study without obtaining a separate study permit. The temporary policy which has been effective from September 4, 2026 allows valid work permit holders to enroll in study programs that are six months or less long, even if the course extends beyond the period they were initially authorized to remain in Canada.
The policy aims to give foreign workers greater flexibility to upgrade their skills, pursue short-term education, and improve their career opportunities while working in Canada. The measure will remain in effect until December 31, 2027, although the government may revoke it earlier without notice.
The exemption applies only while the worker’s valid work permit remains in effect. This change could provide greater opportunities for temporary foreign workers seeking additional education and qualifications without applying for a separate study permit.
