Canada is investing $20 million to expand Ontario’s Practice Ready Ontario (PRO) program. This creates 200 additional positions for internationally trained family physicians by 2028–29. Announced on October 7, 2026, the funding will support 50 additional positions annually over four years, including a dedicated pathway for French-speaking physicians.
The program allows eligible doctors to complete a 12-week clinical field assessment instead of the traditional two-year residency, potentially reducing the licensing process to less than a year for experienced applicants.
To qualify, candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and meet the program’s education, work experience and language requirements. Successful participants must commit to three years of supervised practice in Ontario.
